A project for internally displaced people in Darfur, using sport to promote peace, development and community dialogue.
Sport for Peace and Development in Darfur set out to use sport to open space for dialogue among communities of internally displaced people in North Darfur. Save the Dream implemented the project under the cooperation agreement signed in May 2018 with Qatar Fund for Development and Qatar Charity, within the framework of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur.
Field activities ran in Al Fashir across June and July 2018, led by Save the Dream Ambassador Tegla Loroupe. They combined sport and cultural activities, an advocacy campaign and training workshops on sport for peace and development, so that the public, visible side of the project and the slower work of building skills moved forward together.
At its centre was the training of 50 youth leaders from different IDP communities, equipping them to act as agents of change once the field activities had ended. The workshops covered capacity building, community engagement, social inclusion and the empowerment of girls through sport — the practical skills needed to organise activities, bring communities together and keep sport working as a tool for peace.
