A giving young athletes educational experience abroad and a route into sport event management. learning-mobility programme

TASEM — Training Athletes for Sports Events Management — looked at sport from the athlete’s side: how the experience and discipline built in competition can become the basis for a professional future in the sector. The programme offered young athletes and coaches a period of learning mobility abroad and a route into the management of sport events.

Supported by the European Union and coordinated by the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC), TASEM was a partnership of 15 academic institutions and sports organisations from nine European countries and North Africa. Bringing universities and sports organisations into one partnership meant that academic training and practical experience of events could be combined in a single pathway.

Fifty-two young athletes and coaches from Mediterranean countries — including Algeria, Cyprus, Egypt, Italy, Portugal, Serbia, Spain, Syria and Tunisia — completed the programme in December 2017, with 35 expected to be employed by the organisations that nominated them. The project also produced curriculum and research materials, so that the approach could be used beyond its first cohort.
